The Battle Horse Story
How I went looking for ministry and found the business I’d been in for decades.
In 2018, I was experiencing success in the equipment finance industry – and not for the first time. I’d been a part of accelerating the growth of the company I was working for at the time. But my faith was stirring me to have an impact far larger than a company’s bottom line. I wanted to see more people know Jesus, and I wanted to do it in a full-time capacity.
I’d only seen others do this through full-time ministry in a church or non-profit setting, but I knew my skills and gifts were tied to business. Searching for a path forward, I enrolled in night courses of a bible college with the intent of jumping into ministry full-time.
As I entered the program, a discontent developed in me – a refusal to accept that ministry and business were mutually exclusive paths. That discontent gave rise to the conviction to build a model that I’d not seen at the time, one that blended success in business with an eternal impact. A business with the culture and mission of a church. A business that wakes up every day to dominate an industry to ultimately love and support the people they encounter. A new category was born.
We founded Battle Horse Financial three years ago with a wildly different architecture than other corporate models. Prayer and missional giving existed as primary pillars of the company alongside growth and finance. We focused on taking extraordinary care of three groups of people – our staff, our business community, and those in need. We firmly believe that as a result, God took us further than our business acumen ever could. We saw tremendous growth in revenue in our first two years. Meanwhile our giving was providing scholarships, funding wells in Africa, and caring for cancer patients. Our team was personally caring for orphans in our own backyard. And a team of volunteer intercessors covered every employee, customer, and partner in prayer.
Living in the empirical evidence of this model’s impact every day, we were convinced that every bit of what made it successful was repeatable across any business in any industry. We began to dream of inviting others into the model and multiplying the impact of what God was doing through Battle Horse.
Commerce is the backdrop against which we live our lives outside our homes, and increasingly inside them, too. More than 50% of Americans will never set foot in a church, but 100% of them will engage with businesses daily. If we can reach and mobilize businesses with a Kingdom mission and commercial success, we can impact the world. Let’s do this together.
